Industrial Marking Solutions

Consulting and Products

Industrial marking solutions are far more than simple labeling systems. They form the foundation for transparency, quality assurance, and digital connectivity in modern production environments.

Marking Solutions

Efficiency, Traceability and Future-Proof Production

Industrial marking solutions are a key component of modern manufacturing and logistics processes. They ensure that products, components, and packaging can be clearly identified, tracked, and documented in compliance with regulations. In the era of Industry 4.0, increasing quality standards, and global supply chains, professional marking systems are becoming increasingly strategic in importance.

What are industrial marking solutions?

Industrial marking solutions refer to technologies and systems used to permanently or temporarily mark products or components. The goal is to apply information such as batch numbers, serial numbers, expiration dates, barcodes, or QR codes directly onto the product or its packaging.

Depending on the industry and specific requirements, different technologies are used. These include inkjet printing systems, laser marking, labeling systems, or dot peen marking. The choice of the right solution depends on factors such as material properties, production speed, environmental conditions, and regulatory requirements.

Industrial Marking Solutions

Importance for Industry and Logistics

The demands for transparency and traceability are continuously increasing. Especially in regulated industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, or automotive manufacturing, complete documentation is mandatory. Industrial marking systems enable companies to capture production data in real time and make it available throughout the entire value chain.

Clear product identification allows sources of error to be identified more quickly, recall actions to be carried out in a targeted manner, and quality standards to be sustainably maintained. At the same time, automated marking solutions improve production efficiency, as they can be seamlessly integrated into existing manufacturing lines.

Technologies at a Glance

The choice of the right marking technology depends heavily on the production environment, material, print quality requirements, and level of integration. Modern industrial marking solutions offer a suitable option for almost every application. Below, the key technologies are presented in a structured way – with special focus on TIJ-based marking systems.

TIJ-Based Marking Systems (Thermal Inkjet) – Precision and Flexibility

Thermal inkjet (TIJ) systems are among the most innovative solutions in industrial marking. They operate with replaceable ink cartridges in which microscopic heating elements precisely propel ink onto the substrate. This process enables high-resolution print results while maintaining a compact system design.

TIJ marking systems stand out for their low maintenance requirements and ease of use. Since the printhead and ink are combined in a single cartridge, the extensive cleaning associated with conventional ink systems is eliminated. With every cartridge replacement, a new printhead is installed at the same time, reducing downtime and ensuring consistently high print quality.

Another key advantage is the high print resolution. Text, barcodes, QR codes, and logos can be applied with sharp detail, even at small font sizes. This makes TIJ systems particularly suitable for applications involving variable data, such as serial numbers or customized markings.

Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) – Proven at High Speeds

Continuous inkjet (CIJ) systems are established classics in industrial marking. In this process, a continuous stream of ink is generated, split into individual droplets, and electrostatically controlled. This allows precise print results even at very high production speeds.

CIJ systems are particularly suitable for fast-moving production lines, for example in the beverage, food, or consumer goods industries. They can print on a wide variety of materials such as glass, metal, plastics, or flexible packaging. However, they require regular maintenance and the use of solvents, which should be considered when evaluating operating costs.

Laser Marking – Permanent and Tamper-Proof

Laser marking systems operate without contact and require no ink or consumables. Instead, the surface of the product is altered through the application of heat. Depending on the laser type – such as CO₂, fiber, or UV lasers – various materials including metal, plastic, glass, or cardboard can be permanently marked.

The resulting markings are highly abrasion-resistant, tamper-proof, and extremely durable. This makes laser systems ideal for safety-critical industries such as automotive or medical technology. They are also considered environmentally friendly, as no consumables are required. However, initial investment costs are generally higher compared to ink-based systems.

Labeling Systems – Flexible for Extensive Information

Labeling systems are used when comprehensive product information or variable data needs to be displayed. They enable the application of pre-printed or directly printed labels to a wide variety of packaging formats.

These systems offer a high degree of flexibility and can be combined with print modules to add individual data in real time. They play a key role in logistics, shipping operations, and highly regulated industries.

Sensor-Based Print Triggering

Light barriers and fork sensors detect the product precisely and trigger the printing process at the exact moment. Ideal for conveyor lines, labeling stations, and packaging processes.

Speed Compensation via Encoder

Encoders provide real-time line speed data, allowing the TIJ printer to dynamically adjust the print. This ensures razor-sharp codes without distortion, even during irregular feed movements.

PLC-Controlled Printing Processes

Print layouts, product modes, and batch changes can be fully controlled from the system controller. Digital I/Os, TCP/IP, or fieldbus modules allow for maximum integration depth.

Automatic Data and Layout Changes

Production data is directly imported from ERP, MES, or database systems. Manual input is eliminated, minimizing potential errors.

Multi-Line and Parallel Printing

Centralized control allows multiple printheads or lines to be managed simultaneously – for parallel or different marking tasks.

Quality Control with Vision Systems

Camera systems monitor print quality and readability of 1D/2D codes in real time. Defective parts are automatically marked or rejected.

Industry Examples

High-quality and cost-effective industrial printing is required in almost every sector today. Whether for legal requirements, traceability, or consumer information – dynamic printing processes for text, dates, barcodes, or logos are needed wherever profit-oriented operations are in place.
